About the town
A little about Gurnee
Settlement near the Des Plaines River began in 1835, and the hamlet — first called Wentworth — was renamed for former Chicago mayor Walter S. Gurnee when the railroad station went in. The village incorporated in 1928. Great America opened in 1976 and Gurnee Mills in 1991, which is why a village of about 31,000 people hosts millions of visitors a year.
